This is a guide about Dell recovery disks for the following versions of Windows: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8. A recovery disk is also known as a restore disc, repair disc, boot disc or rescue disk. Dell no longer ships operating system disks with new systems. You can create recovery disks using the Dell Backup and Recovery or Dell DataSafe Local Backup software programs Dell.
I have a Dell Laptop 1545, ddr processorT4500 and it was running slow. The Geeksquad called and informed me that the hard drive crashed. I'll need the recovery disk. Dell is asking 39.99 which is much too high. I would have thought that the Geeksquad would have made a recovery disk. I was informed that they are not allowed to. My question is why didn't they inform me to do it before putting my laptop throw the diagnostic test? Well now I need the recovery disk. Can I down load the recovery disk on line?

If you own a Dell laptop running Windows 8 and decide to replace your hard drive or start fresh, you will need a copy of the recovery media. A built-in Dell Backup and Recovery application helps you to create the recovery disk.
There are two ways to create a recovery disc. They're similar, but not identical. We'll go through the steps for both methods below:
The 1st Process:
1. On the start screen, search for ‘Dell backup & recovery software’ by typing the program's name in the search box. Open the application by clicking on it.
2. Click on the ‘Reinstall Disk/Rescue Disk’ tile.
3. Now you can select either USB flash drive or discs. After selecting your desired option click on ‘Continue’. Make sure that your USB drive has enough space or you have sufficient DVDs. Note that you can’t use CDs or any rewritable media.
4. Attach the USB flash drive or insert the DVD.
5. Click on ‘Start’.
6. If you use an USB Flash drive then you will be notified that the data of the drive will be lost. Click on ‘Yes’ to proceed.
7. Wait until the task is completed. Then click on ‘OK’ once done.
The 2nd process:
1. On the start screen , search for Dell backup and recovery software by typing the name in the search box.
2. Click on the ‘Recovery Media’ tile.
Here you will have two options- (A). Factory Backup:- which will create a copy of factory image of your OS including pre-installed apps and drivers. (B). apps and drivers:- will only create a copy of pre-installed apps and drivers. If you want to make a backup of only the apps and drivers then you can select that option. We will create a full recovery media so we will select the Factory Backup option.
3. Click on Factory Backup.
4. Now you can select either USB flash drive or Discs. After selecting your desired option, click on ‘Continue’. Make sure that your USB drive has enough space or that you have a sufficient amount of DVDs.
5. Insert the blank media on which you want to create the recovery image of your OS. Note that you can’t use CDs or any rewritable media to create recovery media.
6. Click on ‘Start’.
7. If you use an USB Flash drive then you will be notified that the data of that drive will be lost. Click on ‘Yes’ to proceed.
8. Wait until the task is completed. Then click on ‘OK’ once done.
